An amazing phone with some features you might not know about, August 1, 2010

If you're looking for a capable and versatile smartphone, then you absolutely must consider the Captivate. I think most of the other reviewers have covered the basics of how the Captivate compares to the iPhone (and beats it), so let me mention a few features that you might not know about.

1. The phone supports syncing with Exchange out of the box. Not only does it sync e-mail, but it also handles contacts and calendar. I use it for my work e-mail, and it performs flawlessly. Needless to say, you can also connect via POP3 and IMAP.
2. VPN access is also available for those who need to connect to their corporate networks.
3. The basic browser is quite capable, but if you want something else, then you can choose Dolphin Browser, Opera Mini, or Skyfire, to name a few.
4. Although MS Office documents and PDF's aren't supported out of the box, Quickoffice for Captivate and Adobe Reader are free downloads.
5. Google Navigate offers free voice-guided, turn-by-turn GPS navigation. No need to pay AT&T for their service.
6. Wi-fi access is silky smooth. To enable it, pull down the notification drawer at the top of the screen and touch the wi-fi button. Wi-fi will turn on, and if you have never connected to an available network, a list of what's available will appear. Choose the network you want, enter any required login information, and click Connect. That's it, and, from then on, the phone will automatically connect to that network if it's available.
7. I want to mention a little-known app called Google Shopper. Install it, and you'll be able to shop for books and CD's by simply starting the app and pointing the camera at them. The app scans the cover or barcode and shows you prices from online and local merchants. Much faster than having to manually look up titles while you're standing in a bookstore aisle. College students wondering how badly the campus bookstore is ripping them off on textbooks compared to other sellers will appreciate this app.
8. And I can't forget to mention the Captivate's voice recognition capabilities. You can search by voice, and, if you switch the default keyboard from Swype to standard Android, you can use voice dictation for almost anything that you can type. And while it does make mistakes, they don't happen often.
9. Google Voice is available for the Captivate, something Apple will probably never allow on the iPhone. Need separate phone numbers for work and personal use? Then Google Voice is what you're looking for.
9. And finally, if you need or want Push-to-Talk similar to the service that Nextel offers, well, there are several free apps for that. They will only connect you to other Android users running the same app, but, for a business needing to have this functionality and interested in getting several Android phones, then such a solution is worth looking at. The apps are still a little rough around the edges, but give them a little time to mature.

My point here is that, although this is one beautiful phone, it's also extremely good at handling business tasks. Yes, it handles Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter beautifully, but it will also keep you in touch with colleagues and clients as well, if not better than, any other smartphone out there.

I've been holding off my upgrade for a while waiting for the next iphone (iphone4) or android to hit ATT. I went to the ATT store early this morning to finally decide between the iphone 4 and the captivate. I loved the feel of both units, but the captivate's curved body feels sleaker in the hand. While I was very impressed with crispness of the iphone screen; I powered on the captivate and I was even more blown away by the vibrance of the super AMOLED screen. I have spent all day playing around with the phone and have not noticed any sluggishness whatsoever; which was something I feared when looking through online reviews.. I mean c'mon it has the fastest processor out there. Also I read a blog that was spreading a rumor that the Galaxy S phones have a death grip like the iphone 4.. this is completely false as I live in New York where the iphone 4 has problems and have not been able to replicate the effect using multiple grips. So in conclusion I can't say that the phone is an iphone killer for sure.. but it is in my book. It all comes down to personal preferance. I have used the iphone os before and compared to the customizability of Android it comes off as old, locked-to-a-grid and bland. For your referance, I'm 20 years old; and I'm loving where ATT is going with android.

Things I've noticed:
Doesn't have computer software support yet, unless you search for the Samsung Kies software on your own. It detects my device and is compatible.

At first I thought that the USB wouldn't snuggly fit the phone but then I realized that I didn't open the sliding door all the way. But it fits perfectly fine when it is open.. my bad.

The ATT stock apps can not be deleted from the apps menu, but they can be removed from the home screens. It kind of increases the number of items in the menu by alot, but atleast some of those apps I might actually use.

Updates:
You can download full office productivity suite in the Android Marketplace for FREE. It is called "quickoffice for captivate," and it syncs with your Google docs account and dropbox. I think that it is only free for certain phones as it is named "quickoffice for captivate" on my phone, but on my friend's droid it reads just quickoffice and costs around 10 bucks.

I love using this phone for taking video, in good light of course ;). The sound quality comes through very clear as long as you don't block the mic at the bottom.

We purchased these telephones as a replacement for our old VTechs. We had a problem with our phone system and as a result purchased new phones during the diagnosing phase. Our VTechs lasted over 10 years and, as it turns out, were still working well. So we replaced them with VTechs and glad that we stayed with the same manufacturer. The new phones have all the features we expected and they work great with our phone company's set-up. Easy to create your own directory, retrieve numbers, etc. Most of the functions I did without reading the manual. Very user friendly. You will be glad you purchased this phone system.

I have been using my new VTECH phones for about a month now--I wanted to wait at least this long before submitting a review so I could give the product a workout and submit a fair review.

The phones are light weight but well built; the buttons have a great feel and the display is easy to read. I spent about 10 minutes reviewing the nicely organized and easy-to-understand instruction manual before I was well on my way to programming numbers and setting other features. The sound quality has been consistently good and once you've reviewed the manual you'll find the buttons and features to be quite intuitive.

From a practical standpoint, I was looking for a two-station cordless phone that does not have a built-in answering machine as I have voicemail with my phone service. So this phone fit the bill.

There are a couple of features I miss from my old phones I replaced--a belt clip (for trips to the garage when I don't want to miss a call) and a headphone jack. However, given the excellent price point of this product, I have no room to complain (For long conference calls I have been using the speakerphone feature, which also works well). I read some reviews where people complained that this phone does not have distinctive ring tones. If this is a feature you absolutely can't live without, look for a different product--remember, the price is great for what you get.

In case you're wondering, I have had zero interference with my home wireless network, which would have prompted me to immediately return this product.

The bottom line: If you're looking for a good-quality phone at a very attractive price, this is the one.

A sincere but not sentimental collection of essays on favorite games, January 20, 2008

I love the premise of this book: Get 100 games designers, publisher, editors, inventors and so on to write a short essay about their favorite game.

And in that, the book delivers on its promise. That is exactly what you get here; a collection of very short essays (roughly 2 1/2 pages each) that most often give a short background of the game being praised and then reasons for the praise.

I have already learned about several games I'd never even heard of, including one that completely escaped my radar over the years: Fluxx. Suffice to say I've now ordered a copy from the publisher of that game. :)

Where the book falls sort (I feel) is in two places:

1) There are no pictures, graphics, illustrations of any kind in this book. It's all text. While I realize fancy images might have added to the length and therefore the cost of the book it might also have been nice to see some sort of visual representation of what are often very visually-oriented games.

2) There are no "old favorites" in this book. No one (apparently) loved Monopoly, Scrabble, Stratego or even chess enough to write an essay about it. While you could argue that many of the games included in the book are more advanced/mature that the short list of examples above, it's also true that old favorites often get to be that way for a reason.

Overall though, I found this to be a very entertaining book. The structure (the short essay-style) makes it easy to pick-up, read about a few games, then put it down until next time. There's no need to read the book in order to get some satisfaction out of it.

This book does a great job given that the author has a wide scope of all hobby games - board, role-playing, cards, etc - and that he takes an unusual approach. He has different designers choose and write a few pages each about their favorite game by another designer. This has the interesting effect of having author names both as authors of sections of the book and listed as designers of another (and sometimes a number of others) game in another part of the book. I think the approach serves well to reveal some insider history to game development and how ideas for different games came about.

There seems to be a good balance here right down to the intro by a well-known Euro designer, and a postscript by a well-known wargame designer. Throughout the book there are a wide variety of different hobby games as noted above and all the types seem to have their fair share of coverage. Any fan of games will find there is a glaring omission of what they would think should obviously be in a book called '100 Best', but that comes from the nature of a hobby where preferences are so divergent.

Where I think the approach may have a few glitches is in how it reflects the title '100 Best'. Of course 'best' is going to be very subjective no matter what. But for example among the wargames represented, there were a good number of great games. However I found most of the wargame selections were of older titles where the games had particular mechanics like the hex and counter variety, and very recent titles where the games are card-driven point to point types. This would follow a misconception that older wargames are hex and counter, while newer ones are usually card-driven with point to point maps. But the reality with wargames at least is that both these types make up a good number of great games both old and new. The reason I mention this is I didn't notice this discrepancy of choices with the other types of games, although perhaps it's because I'm not familiar enough with them.

Despite the one criticism, I really enjoyed reading about all these games from designers' points of view. I got the book for a Christmas present, so it was a great holiday read!

I bought 2 of these - one for my small 15 lbs. dog, and one for my other small dog, a regular sized Chihuahua male that weighs around 7 pounds. The harness worked great for the larger of the two dogs because he had a bigger girth than the Chihuahua, and because his neck was larger. Although the manufacture claims it's appropriate for a 6 lbs. dog, I strongly don't think it's appropriate for dogs smaller than 10 lbs. or that have a neck size of less than 10 inches after my Chihuahua slipped out and slammed into the back of the driver seat in my car while I was driving. I wished Solvit made an XS size because their size small is too big for small dogs weighing 6 pounds or more.

On a side note, Amazon's return policy is awesome.

I bought this when my puppy was 15 pounds. She's now over 20 pounds, and the small size still fits. I will definitely upgrade to the medium size when necessary. I tried 3 other car restraints on my dog before finding this one. I think both the dog and I love this product. It's easy to put on, easy to install, and easy to wear for her. I strap it to the shoulder belt in the back/middle seat so she has a great view of the entire car. She can move around freely, but cannot jump up to the front seat. Very good value!

This book is like my automotive bible, I am from Trinidad and own my automtive shop, getting up to date in the automotive field here is a real problem, this book gave me the opportunity to better myself in my field. It also helped me to passed the A1 and A8 ASE certification in one try that was recently introduced into my country 1 year ago. I highly recommend this book to all interested in this field.

This well-written, comprehensive book contains an incredible amount of information about the workings of automobiles. The text is very readable, and it presumes no previous knowledge about automobiles or mechanics. Chapters on tools and basic electronics theory will appeal to beginners, while their subsequent chapters build on this knowledge and get quite in-depth.

The fact that the book does not focus on specific makes and models makes it all the more valuable. Descriptions of the various automotive systems typically begin with a very broad overview, followed by a description of the various different types or subsystems available, and ultimately proceed to a great level of detail. This approach makes it very easy to understand the purpose of each system as a whole, without having to get into more technical details. Of course, if the reader chooses to proceed, very in-depth details are available and are presented just as clearly. The book is thoroughly and clearly illustrated. To cap it off, numerous photo sequences show technicians performing many of the procedures which are described in the text.

I have successfully used this title as as a "how-to" book when working on my own car. Even if you do not work on your own automobile, however, you will find it useful to consult to help you understand just what your car (or mechanic) is trying to tell you. It is also useful to consult when considering the purchase of a new vehicle. Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach will easily pay for itself by helping you make the right decisions about your automobile. It also makes for a phenomenal coffee-table book for the armchair gearhead.
